This year's Annual SC Association of School Nurses Conference focuses on the pieces needed to have healthy children. During the Pre-Conference we will learn about mental illness in our school children. A child's mental health is a key component in their healthy development. The Main Conference Day will be composed of several topics. We will begin by discussing the drug Naloxone. Deaths from prescription pain killers have become an epidemic. According to the CDC (2014) in 2010 about 12 million Americans 12 and older reported nonmedical use of prescription painkillers. Naloxone is the medication given to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. Asthma rates have more than tripled in the Unites States since 1980 (DHEC, 2015). As of 2012 it was estimated that 6.8 million children in the United States were asthmatic (DHEC, 2015). We will discuss the comprehensive management of the asthmatic student using the Asthma Action Plan as well as experience some hands-on with treatment methods. The prevalence of Type I and Type II Diabetes has been increasing in the United States (Dabelea, D., et al., 2015). We will also discuss Type I and Type II Diabetes in the pediatric population focusing on glucose level, things that impact glucose levels, treatment for both hypo and hyperglycemia, and hands-on with some insulin pumps. Last year the number of snake bites increased by 30% (Boschult, 2017). As we approach our warm season we will begin to see more snake bites. There are 6 venomous snakes in South Carolina. We will discuss the different types and learn how to treat these children.
