Happy School Nurse Day 2026!
Every year from May 6th to May 12th, we honor the service and dedication of nurses nationwide. This week was chosen since Florence Nightingale’s birthday is May 12th. While we are all familiar with Florence and her tireless work during the Crimean War, have you heard about Lillian Wald and Lina Rogers? Lillian Wald was a late 19th-century nurse, social worker, and public health official who recognized that healthy children were more successful at school. She founded the
Henry Street Settlement
and hired Lina Rogers in 1902 as the first school nurse in the United States.
Their goal still rings true today- To Keep Children in School. Their program demonstrated their effectiveness by reducing communicable disease exclusions from over 10,000 per year to 1,100 per year in ONE year. Our practice is still guided by the foundations our foremothers developed. We are caregivers, advocates, educators, and problem-solvers who focus on Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Prevention.
